Estranged for years from her father and four brothers after her mother’s death, Carson Cartwright is surprised when she gets a phone call from her twin brother, urging a reconciliation before their father succumbs to his final illness. Though she has spent more than a decade trying to forget her family existed, she is suddenly pulled back to the Montana ranch where she grew up.

Carson discovers her brothers divided over plans to change their working ranch into a guest ranch, and their consultant, Kerry Elder, doesn’t seem above using her wiles to get her way. Kerry finds that while she may have her clients right where she wants them, it’s the wayward sister that may be awakening something she has long denied.

The big Montana sky crackles with thunder and lightning as emotions twist in unbidden directions. Neither Carson nor Kerry is prepared for the wild storms of summer.

Exiled from her home as a teen, 30 year old soft butch Carson Cartwright finds her way back to the old Montana ranch 12 years later. Waiting for her are a house full of bitter brothers, one cranky old man on his death bed... and one dormant lesbian in over her head in this house full of testosterone.

Kerry Elder is the 34 year old consultant hired to help transform this ailing ranch into a profitable guest ranch... newly single from her ex-boyfriend and finally detached from a bigger corporate employer, Kerry hopes to launch her own career as a self-employed consultant and break out on her own.

Needlesstosay, the air is full of change.

* There are some light spoilers ahead.

Rejected by her father, Carson had spiraled into a loveless lifestyle of empty sex and travel... never letting anyone close.

But then. There is Kerry. Beautiful Kerry. Her savior? Or just another hot straight girl intrigued by Carson's smoldering charms and "dark skin" good looks? Not according to Carson's gaydar... this girl has manhands! Okay, the author didn't use 'manhands'... but it was something along those terms. My taste for feminine women probably didn't need that particular detail, lol.

I don't know if it was the house full of unmarried blending brothers - Colt, Chase, Cody, Chance on this Circle C Ranch... or how the family squabbles took the forefront here... but Carson and Kerry kinda took a backseat here and I felt no real chemistry between these two- probably because the trust was so instant and I struggled to buy into it.

But then they slept together and even I got brainwashed. They were definitely a couple and fun to watch at his point. Why? Because Gerri Hill can do some pretty hot sex scenes, lol... I just preferred these lighter scenes.

Entirely too much focus was given to a house full of men I didn't care about. And not because they're men... but because we didn't really get to know them or care about them... this is a really dysfunctional, socially inept bunch due to their isolation, lack of mother, and daddy issues. In the end only the gay people get to be happy... this kind of bothered me.

This really wasn't a hopeless story, but it has its flaws. I enjoyed the country setting, the storm, and each and every time these two got naked. I would have liked to see Kerry's femininity highlighted more. She got a bad rap with those manhands. ;P I suspect she was prettier than that but was seldom described... at least not for my tastes.

Overall, the family drama was repetitive and unsympathetic for me... and the hostile lust one brother aims at Kerry becomes tiring and silly.

I suppose the author felt the same... she seems to have abandoned the whole thing around the end and we never know what happened at the old Circle C Ranch and the brothers. What did I miss?! You'll know what I mean when you read... I couldn't help feeling there was some chapter missing....??

I'm a sucker for the idea of ranches and girls on horses and such... this is flawed (or typical?) but a guilty little pleasure. And did I say the sex was awesome?? (Oh please don't interpret my playful stress on her sex scenes as gratuitous or pornographic... I just like to see an author who knows how to do sexy sex in my romances :) )

I'm a Gerri Hill fan for sure... she has the easy style and bearable drama I enjoy most from this genre. But I think she definitely has some better stories.

this had such potential. Carson was forsaken by her family. The pent up anger that has turned her into a woman who doesn't feel anything. She comes back to resolve issues. My only question? Does anything really get resolved with the family? That's the only negative about this. You have a great character in Kerry. Unsure of herself one moment and then confident the next. As always, falling in love is never easy. So watching these two characters fall in love is worth the read.
Gerri Hill builds her characters throughout the book; showing their strengths, and easing in their weaknesses. She designs her stage better than a Broadway show. Combining the two can only create a great book and an even greater adventure. I love fast action and suspense, but I love reading Gerri Hill for the complexity of the characters and how they relate with each other. "Storms" has all this while dealing with the stereo type cowboy, being gay, and all the different ways of looking at it. Well done Gerri!
Gerri Hill is an exceptional author. I have enjoyed all of her books, and I am waiting patiently for the next one to come out. It is easy to get caught up in the story, it flows well and the character development is well thought out. I have a hard time putting her books down after I start them and Storms was no exception. When you first start reading you can almost tell what's going to happen, but it's so much fun seeing it unfold and develop. I would highly recommend Storms and all of her books.
The book is interesting enough and is written in the same Gerri Hill's style,
but the end comes too fast. there are a lot of loose ends and it seems like there are a couple of missing chapters in order to feel that the story ends properly.
it feels like the author reached the end of the pages that were planned for this book and rushed to end the book in a few pages.
This isn't Hill's best book, or her worst, it's just an average read. The plot is covered in the description so no need for me to recap that. Of the two main characters only Carson is really given any depth, Kerry serves largely to advance Carson's storyline. Still the romance between them is sweet enough to satisfy for the most part. The most problematic part is the story does not serve the relationship between Carson and her brothers well, there's never any real reason given for why none of them (especially her twin) have bothered to look her up in twelve years, nor are their problems resolved. And Hill has done readers no favors by naming all of the siblings 'C' names (that are also quite similar), since this makes it difficult to distinguish between them and they have no storyline (except for her twin) to speak of to help sort out who's who. In fact in the fight scene I couldn't keep track of who was doing what. Buy it if you have a few hours to kill on a beach somewhere. Shouldn't take much longer than that to read it.
One thing I enjoy about Gerri Hill's writing is when her romances are set in a setting where life is slower, closer to nature. Generally one of her characters is seeking an escape or brought into the setting by circumstances that ultimately allow the character to reflect upon their often hurried and driven lives. They usually meet someone who is more comfortable in their own skin and very appealing. As the pair dance around their relationship, weaving in and out of the setting's tranquility, I get the sense of an organic growth to the relationship, one that leaves me feeling satisfied and glad to have made their aquaintance.

In this case Carson's return to her family's ranch reconnects her to her roots both family and land. But the need to open the ranch to guests has her wondering if this going to bring the resolution she desparately needs. It takes Kerry slowly showing her that her past and present can co-exist in harmony leading to a better future not only for her but her family and land.

Other favorites are "Coyote Sky", "No Strings", "Sierra City", "Artist's Dream" , "Behind the Pine Curtain" and "The Rainbow Cedar"
